Aminul Islam Takes Charge as New BCB President

In a major development for Bangladesh cricket, former national team captain Aminul Islam has officially taken over as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), replacing Faruque Ahmed. The transition was confirmed by BCB officials on Friday, May 30, and has been hailed as a significant moment for the sport in the country. Aminul now becomes the 16th individual to lead the board, and he brings with him years of cricketing experience and a strong vision for reform.

Aminul, who was part of Bangladesh’s early Test journey and played 13 Test matches and 49 ODIs for the national side, expressed his gratitude and sense of responsibility in taking over the new role. “Our respected directors of the Cricket Board have elected me as the Board President. I received that call from the Honourable Sports Advisor. I was honoured. Now, I have received an even bigger responsibility,” he told reporters.

He emphasised unity and a national spirit in his approach to leading the BCB. “Cricket is not played by just eleven players — it’s played by the whole of Bangladesh,” he declared. “We’ve achieved great things before — like playing Test cricket for 25 years, winning the U19 World Cup, and our women’s team winning the Asia Cup. We can do more.”

Aminul also took the opportunity to congratulate the newly elected Vice Presidents, Fahim Sinha and Nazmul Abedin Fahim, noting that this leadership team is committed to building a better future for cricket in Bangladesh. “Let’s not talk too much — I want to focus on working more,” he said.

One of the first challenges Aminul faces is holding a transparent and credible BCB election. According to a letter dated May 29 from the National Sports Council (NSC), Faruque Ahmed was removed from his position as both president and councillor of the board, paving the way for Aminul’s appointment. Notably, Aminul was also recently appointed by the NSC as a government-nominated councillor to the BCB, replacing Sheikh Hamim Hasan.

Drawing from his past work as a development officer at the International Cricket Council (ICC), Aminul aims to introduce grassroots reforms that decentralise cricket across the country. “Our number one priority is to spread cricket,” he explained. “When we gained Test status, we promised the ICC that we would decentralise the game by creating a regional governing structure. That framework is now ready.”

He added, “I will present this to the board tomorrow. There will be three main goals: build a strong coaching system nationwide, identify young talents, and form a competitive cricket structure that nurtures raw, natural talent.”

This shift marks a potentially transformative moment for cricket in Bangladesh. While previous administrations have had mixed results in terms of development and governance, Aminul’s background as both a player and administrator makes him a unique figure to spearhead change.

The cricketing community in Bangladesh and abroad will now watch closely as Aminul begins to implement his vision. His leadership comes at a time when the national team is looking to bounce back on the global stage and improve its consistency across formats. With bold promises and a call for unity, Aminul Islam steps into the presidency with ambition, clarity, and the weight of a cricket-loving nation on his shoulders.
