Faruque Ahmed, the current president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), said the national government has requested that he not continue in his position. This decision has brought both surprise and hope as changes seem to be happening in the country’s cricket leadership.
Faruque became the BCB president after Nazmul Hasan stepped down on August 21. On May 28, he was called in for a meeting with Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Affairs Adviser. During that meeting, Faruque was informed that the government no longer wanted him in the role.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Faruque said, “The advisor told me they don’t want to continue with me. I haven’t made a decision yet. Let’s see what happens.”
If Faruque refuses to resign and is instead removed, the situation could create problems with the International Cricket Council (ICC). In the past, the ICC banned Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for allowing government interference in their cricket boards. This is why the government must be cautious in how the transition is handled.
Faruque Ahmed Urged to Step Down as BCB President — What This Means for the Future of Bangladesh Cricket

This development shocked many fans but also raised hopes for a better future. It is believed that Aminul Islam, a former national cricket captain, is likely to take over. Aminul currently works as a development officer for the ICC and may soon resign from his post to prepare for the upcoming BCB election in October.
Aminul recently arrived in Dhaka and has already met with top government officials. Discussions included his possible role as the next BCB president. His experience and international exposure have made him a strong candidate.
Faruque Ahmed is no stranger to Bangladesh cricket. He played seven One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the national team and served twice as the BCB’s chief selector. However, he stepped down from his second term after disagreements over how the selection panel was being expanded.
Recently, the National Sports Council (NSC) appointed both Faruque Ahmed and Nazmul Abedin as its new directors. Nazmul Abedin is a respected local coach and critic of the BCB’s current leadership. They both attended the latest board meeting at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The NSC’s move came after it replaced two former directors—Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam. While Yunus resigned quietly, Alam refused, leaving the final decision to the NSC. This reshuffle followed Nazmul Hasan’s decision to quit. He has since traveled to London with his wife, amid political unrest and protests by students in the country.
This is a turning point for Bangladesh cricket. While the government’s involvement has caused some concern, many believe that a fresh leadership under someone like Aminul Islam could bring positive changes. Now, all eyes are on Faruque’s next move and how it could shape the future of the game in Bangladesh.
