Rishad Hossain Joins Hobart Hurricanes for Upcoming Big Bash League Season

Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain is set to feature in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the first time, having been signed by the Hobart Hurricanes. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has already granted him clearance to participate, and he is expected to play the entire tournament, which begins on December 14.

The Hurricanes had previously signed Rishad last season, but he was unable to join the squad due to his commitments in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Despite his absence, Hobart went on to claim their first-ever Big Bash League title.

Speaking to Cricbuzz on Monday, Rishad expressed his excitement about joining the Australian franchise, especially under the guidance of legendary cricketer Ricky Ponting, who serves as the team’s Head of Strategy.

“Ponting was one of my favourite players when I was a child I used to watch him play,” Rishad said. “I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Reports suggest that Ponting personally selected Rishad from the draft, impressed by his potential as a young leg-spinner. Rishad also shared that playing under Ponting’s mentorship was one of the main reasons behind his enthusiasm to join the Hurricanes.

“I’m more excited about working with Ricky Ponting and learning under his coaching than even playing alongside the big names,” he added.

Explaining his motivation to play in foreign leagues, Rishad said,

“I kept asking myself how I could improve further. Playing in these tournaments gives me a great chance to grow. These matches take place at venues I’ve always dreamed of playing in.”

He further noted,

“Competing in overseas leagues as a leg-spinner will help me develop my bowling skills. You get to share the dressing room with top players from around the world that experience and knowledge are invaluable. I’m hoping to learn and evolve as a cricketer.”
